RESUMO

Nanoparticle synthesis on microfluidic platforms provides excellent reproducibility and control over bulk synthesis. While there have been plenty of platforms for producing nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled physicochemical properties, such platforms often operate in a narrow range of predefined flow rates. The flow rate limitation restricts either up-scalability for industrial production or down-scalability for exploratory research use. Here, we present a universal flow rate platform that operates over a wide range of flow rates (0.1-75 mL/min) for small-scale exploratory research and industrial-level synthesis of NPs without compromising the mixing capabilities. The wide range of flow rate is obtained by using a coaxial flow with a triangular microstructure to create a vortex regardless of the flow regime (Reynolds number). The chip synthesizes several types of NPs for gene and protein delivery, including polyplex, lipid NPs, and solid polymer NPs via self-assembly and precipitation, and successfully expresses GFP plasmid DNA in human T cells.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) is a common disease of the male urinary system, and its incidence rate in China is increasing. However, the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of BPH remains unclear. Some studies demonstrated that the incidence of BPH was related to the change in the levels of steroid hormones. Too high content of dihydrotestosterone(DHT) in the body may cause BPH and other related diseases. Testosterone(T) is converted to DHT by 5α-reductase(SRD5A). By inhibiting the activity of this enzyme, the production of DHT can be reduced, and then the incidence of BPH can be lowered. Therefore, it has drawn great attention to screen and discover safer and more effective 5α-reductase inhibitors from natural medicines to treat prostatic hyperplasia without affecting the physiological function of men. This review summarizes the characteristics and tissue distribution of 5α-reductase, the discovery of 5α-reductase inhibitors in traditional Chinese medicine and natural medicines, 5α-reductase inhibitors commonly used in clinical practice and their side effects, as well as the animal models of prostatic hyperplasia and common detection indicators, aiming to provide a reference for more in-depth understanding and research about BPH and development of drugs.

OBJECTIVES: To build self-supervised foundation models for multicontrast MRI of the whole brain and evaluate their efficacy in assisting diagnosis of brain tumors. METHODS: In this retrospective study, foundation models were developed using 57,621 enhanced head MRI scans through self-supervised learning with a pretext task of cross-contrast context restoration with two different content dropout schemes. Downstream classifiers were constructed based on the pretrained foundation models and fine-tuned for brain tumor detection, discrimination, and molecular status prediction. Metrics including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the performance. Convolutional neural networks trained exclusively on downstream task data were employed for comparative analysis. RESULTS: The pretrained foundation models demonstrated their ability to extract effective representations from multicontrast whole-brain volumes. The best classifiers, endowed with pretrained weights, showed remarkable performance with accuracies of 94.9, 92.3, and 80.4%, and corresponding AUC values of 0.981, 0.972, and 0.852 on independent test datasets in brain tumor detection, discrimination, and molecular status prediction, respectively. The classifiers with pretrained weights outperformed the convolutional classifiers trained from scratch by approximately 10% in terms of accuracy and AUC across all tasks. The saliency regions in the correctly predicted cases are mainly clustered around the tumors. Classifiers derived from the two dropout schemes differed significantly only in the detection of brain tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Foundation models obtained from self-supervised learning have demonstrated encouraging potential for scalability and interpretability in downstream brain tumor-related tasks and hold promise for extension to neurological diseases with diffusely distributed lesions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The application of our proposed method to the prediction of key molecular status in gliomas is expected to improve treatment planning and patient outcomes. Additionally, the foundation model we developed could serve as a cornerstone for advancing AI applications in the diagnosis of brain-related diseases.

BACKGROUND: Hyalomma ticks are widely distributed in semi-arid zones in Northwest China. They have been reported to harbor a large number of zoonotic pathogens. METHODS: In this study, a total of 334 Hyalomma asiaticum ticks infesting domestic animals were collected from four locations in Xinjiang, Northwest China, and the bacterial agents in them were investigated. RESULTS: A putative novel Borrelia species was identified in ticks from all four locations, with an overall positive rate of 6.59%. Rickettsia sibirica subsp. mongolitimonae, a human pathogen frequently reported in Europe, was detected for the second time in China. Two Ehrlichia species (Ehrlichia minasensis and Ehrlichia sp.) were identified. Furthermore, two Anaplasma species were characterized in this study: Candidatus Anaplasma camelii and Anaplasma sp. closely related to Candidatus Anaplasma boleense. It is the first report of Candidatus Anaplasma camelii in China. CONCLUSIONS: Six bacterial agents were reported in this study, many of which are possible or validated pathogens for humans and animals. The presence of these bacterial agents may suggest a potential risk for One Health in this area.

There has been an increasing demand for simultaneous detection of multiple analytes in one sample. Microbead-based platforms have been developed for multiplexed assays. However, most of the microbeads are made of non-biodegradable synthetic polymers, leading to environmental and human health concerns. In this study, we developed an environmentally friendly dextran microbeads as a new type of multi-analyte assay platform. Biodegradable dextran was utilized as the primary material. Highly uniform magnetic dextran microspheres were successfully synthesized using the Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification technique. To enhance the amount of surface functional groups for ligand conjugation, we coated the dextran microbeads with a layer of dendrimers via a simple electrostatic adsorption process. Subsequently, a unique and efficient click chemistry coupling technique was developed for the fluorescence encoding of the microspheres, enabling multiplexed detection. The dextran microbeads were tested for 3-plex cytokine analysis, and exhibited excellent biocompatibility, stable coding signals, low background noise and high sensitivity.

Background: Migraine has an increased prevalence in several immune disorders, but genetic cause-effect relationships remain unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used in this study to explore whether immune diseases are causally associated with migraine and its subtypes. Methods: We conducted a two-sample bidirectional multivariate Mendelian randomization study. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) for six immune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma and psoriasis, were used as genetic instrumental variables. Summary statistics for migraine were obtained from 3 databases: the International Headache Genetics Consortium (IHGC), UK Biobank, and FinnGen study. MR analyses were performed per outcome database for each exposure and subsequently meta-analyzed. Reverse MR analysis was performed to determine whether migraine were risk factors for immune diseases. In addition, we conducted a genetic correlation to identify shared genetic variants for these two associations. Results: No significant causal relationship was found between immune diseases and migraine and its subtypes. These results were robust with a series of sensitivity analyses. Using the linkage disequilibrium score regression method (LDSC), we detected no genetic correlation between migraine and immune diseases. Conclusion: The evidence from our study does not support a causal relationship between immune diseases and migraine. The mechanisms underlying the frequent comorbidity of migraine and several immune diseases need to be further elucidated.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by persistent damage to the intestinal barrier and excessive inflammation, leading to increased intestinal permeability. Current treatments of IBD primarily address inflammation, neglecting epithelial repair. Our previous study has reported the therapeutic potential of notoginsenoside R1 (NGR1), a characteristic saponin from the root of Panax notoginseng, in alleviating acute colitis by reducing mucosal inflammation. In this study we investigated the reparative effects of NGR1 on mucosal barrier damage after the acute injury stage of DSS exposure. DSS-induced colitis mice were orally treated with NGR1 (25, 50, 125 mg·kg-1·d-1) for 10 days. Body weight and rectal bleeding were daily monitored throughout the experiment, then mice were euthanized, and the colon was collected for analysis. We showed that NGR1 administration dose-dependently ameliorated mucosal inflammation and enhanced epithelial repair evidenced by increased tight junction proteins, mucus production and reduced permeability in colitis mice. We then performed transcriptomic analysis on rectal tissue using RNA-sequencing, and found NGR1 administration stimulated the proliferation of intestinal crypt cells and facilitated the repair of epithelial injury; NGR1 upregulated ISC marker Lgr5, the genes for differentiation of intestinal stem cells (ISCs), as well as BrdU incorporation in crypts of colitis mice. In NCM460 human intestinal epithelial cells in vitro, treatment with NGR1 (100 µM) promoted wound healing and reduced cell apoptosis. NGR1 (100 µM) also increased Lgr5+ cells and budding rates in a 3D intestinal organoid model. We demonstrated that NGR1 promoted ISC proliferation and differentiation through activation of the Wnt signaling pathway. Co-treatment with Wnt inhibitor ICG-001 partially counteracted the effects of NGR1 on crypt Lgr5+ ISCs, organoid budding rates, and overall mice colitis improvement. These results suggest that NGR1 alleviates DSS-induced colitis in mice by promoting the regeneration of Lgr5+ stem cells and intestinal reconstruction, at least partially via activation of the Wnt/ß-Catenin signaling pathway. This was manifested by the decreased expression of tight junction proteins, reduced mucus production in goblet cells, and increased intestinal permeability in colitis mice. Additionally, Lgr5+ ISCs were in obviously deficiency in colitis mice, with aberrant down-regulation of the Wnt/ß-Catenin signaling. However, NGR1 amplified the expression of the ISC marker Lgr5, elevated the expression of genes associated with ISC differentiation, enhanced the incorporation of BrdU in the crypt and promoted epithelial restoration to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice, at least partially, by activating the Wnt/ß-Catenin signaling pathway.

Novel 2D materials with low-symmetry structures exhibit great potential applications in developing monolithic polarization-sensitive photodetectors with small volume. However, owing to the fact that at least half of them presented a small anisotropic factor of ≈2, comprehensive performance of present polarization-sensitive photodetectors based on 2D materials is still lower than the practical application requirements. Herein, a self-driven photodetector with high polarization sensitivity using a broken-gap ReSe2 /SnSe2 van der Waals heterojunction (vdWH) is demonstrated. Anisotropic ratio of the photocurrent (Imax /Imin ) could reach 12.26 (635 nm, 179 mW cm-2 ). Furthermore, after a facile combination of the ReSe2 /SnSe2 device with multilayer graphene (MLG), Imax /Imin of the MLG/ReSe2 /SnSe2 can be further increased up to13.27, which is 4 times more than that of pristine ReSe2 photodetector (3.1) and other 2D material photodetectors even at a bias voltage. Additionally, benefitting from the synergistic effect of unilateral depletion and photoinduced tunneling mechanism, the MLG/ReSe2 /SnSe2 device exhibits a fast response speed (752/928 µs) and an ultrahigh light on/off ratio (105 ). More importantly, MLG/ReSe2 /SnSe2 device exhibits excellent potential applications in polarized imaging and polarization-coded optical communication with quaternary logic state without any power supply. This work provides a novel feasible avenue for constructing next-generation smart polarization-sensitive photodetector with low energy consumption.

BACKGROUND: While observational studies and experimental data suggest a link between oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral cavity cancer (OCC), the causal relationship and the role of inflammatory cytokines remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed a univariable and multivariable Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between OLP and the risk of OCC. Additionally, the potential role of inflammatory cytokines in modulating this association was explored. Instrumental variables were derived from genetic variants associated with OLP (n = 377,277) identified in Finngen R9 datasets, with 41 inflammatory cytokines as potential mediators, and OCC (n = 4,151) as the outcome variable. Analytical methods including Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW), Weighted Median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO were utilized to assess the causal links among OLP, inflammatory cytokines, and OCC risk. Multivariable MR (MVMR) was then applied to quantify the mediating effects of these cytokines in the relationship between OLP and increased OCC risk. RESULTS: MR analysis provided strong evidence of a causal relationship between OLP (OR = 1.417, 95% CI = 1.167-1.721, p < 0.001) and the risk of OCC. Furthermore, two inflammatory cytokines significantly influenced by OLP, IL-13 (OR = 1.088, 95% CI: 1.007-1.175, P = 0.032) and IL-9 (OR = 1.085, 95% CI: 1.005-1.171, P = 0.037), were identified. Subsequent analysis revealed a significant causal association only between IL-13 (OR = 1.408, 95% CI: 1.147-1.727, P = 0.001) and higher OCC risk, establishing it as a potential mediator. Further, MVMR analysis indicated that IL-13 (OR = 1.437, 95% CI = 1.139-1.815, P = 0.002) mediated the relationship between OLP and OCC, accounting for 8.13% of the mediation. CONCLUSION: This study not only elucidates the potential causal relationship between OLP and the risk of OCC but also highlights the pivotal mediating role of IL-13 in this association.

BACKGROUND: The relaxation of the "zero-COVID" policy on Dec. 7, 2022, in China posed a major public health threat recently. Complete blood count test was discovered to have complicated relationships with COVID-19 after the infection, while very few studies could track long-term monitoring of the health status and identify the characterization of hematological parameters prior to COVID-19. METHODS: Based on a 13-year longitudinal prospective health checkup cohort of ~ 480,000 participants in West China Hospital, the largest medical center in western China, we documented 998 participants with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 during the 1 month after the policy. We performed a time-to-event analysis to explore the associations of severe COVID-19 patients diagnosed, with 34 different hematological parameters at the baseline level prior to COVID-19, including the whole and the subtypes of white and red blood cells. RESULTS: A total of 998 participants with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test were documented in the cohort, 42 of which were severe cases. For white blood cell-related parameters, a higher level of basophil percentage (HR = 6.164, 95% CI = 2.066-18.393, P = 0.001) and monocyte percentage (HR = 1.283, 95% CI = 1.046-1.573, P = 0.017) were found associated with the severe COVID-19. For lymphocyte-related parameters, a lower level of lymphocyte count (HR = 0.571, 95% CI = 0.341-0.955, P = 0.033), and a higher CD4/CD8 ratio (HR = 2.473, 95% CI = 1.009-6.059, P = 0.048) were found related to the risk of severe COVID-19. We also observed that abnormality of red cell distribution width (RDW), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hemoglobin might also be involved in the development of severe COVID-19. The different trajectory patterns of RDW-SD and white blood cell count, including lymphocyte and neutrophil, prior to the infection were also discovered to have significant associations with the risk of severe COVID-19 (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings might help decision-makers and clinicians to classify different risk groups of population due to outbreaks including COVID-19. They could not only optimize the allocation of medical resources, but also help them be more proactive instead of reactive to long COVID-19 or even other outbreaks in the future.

Myocarditis has emerged as a rare but lethal immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated toxicity. However, the exact mechanism and the specific therapeutic targets remain underexplored. In this study, we aim to characterise the transcriptomic profiles based on single-cell RNA sequencing from ICI-related myocarditis. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples were collected from four groups for single-cell RNA sequencing: (1) patients with newly diagnosed lung squamous cell carcinoma before treatment (Control Group); (2) patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma with PD-1 inhibitor therapy who did not develop myocarditis (PD-1 Group); (3) patients during fulminant ICI-related myocarditis onset (Myocarditis Group); and (4) Patients with fulminant ICI-related myocarditis during disease remission (Recovery Group). Subcluster determination, functional analysis, single-cell trajectory and cell-cell interaction analysis were performed after scRNA-seq. Bulk-RNA sequencing was performed for further validation. Our results revealed the diversity of cellular populations in ICI-related myocarditis, marked by their distinct transcriptional profiles and biological functions. Monocytes, NKs as well as B cells contribute to the regulation of innate immunity and inflammation in ICI-related myocarditis. With integrated analysis of scRNA-seq and bulk sequencing, we identified S100A protein family as a potential serum marker for ICI-related myocarditis. Our study has created a cell atlas of PBMC during ICI-related myocarditis, which would shed light on the pathophysiological mechanism and potential therapeutic targets of ICI-related myocarditis in continuous exploration.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors have attracted considerable attention owing to their potential application prospects in navigation, optical switching, and communication. However, it remains challenging to develop a facile and effective strategy to simultaneously meet the demands of low power consumption, high performance, and excellent polarization sensitivity. Herein, a series of low-symmetry two-dimensional (2D) ReSe2 Schottky photodetectors with geometry-asymmetric contacts are constructed. These devices exhibit excellent photoelectrical performance and impressive polarization sensitivity in the self-powered mode owing to the difference in the Schottky barrier height induced by the asymmetric contact areas, interfacial states, and thickness difference. Particularly, an outstanding responsivity of 379 mA/W, a decent specific detectivity of 6.8 × 1011 Jones, and a high light on/off ratio (Ilight/Idark) of over 105 under 635 nm light illumination are achieved. Scanning photocurrent mapping (SPCM) measurements further confirm that the ReSe2/drain overlapped region (corresponding to the smaller contact area side) with a higher Schottky barrier height plays a dominant role in the generation of photocurrent. Furthermore, the proposed device displays impressive polarization ratios (PRs) of 3.1 and 3.6 at zero bias under 635 and 808 nm irradiation, respectively. The high-resolution single-pixel imaging capability is also demonstrated. This work reveals the great potential of the ReSe2 Schottky photodetector with geometry-asymmetric contacts for high-performance, self-powered, and polarization-sensitive photodetection.

INTRODUCTION: The established association between thyroid disorders (TD) and its two main subtypes-hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism-and the incidence of oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OCPC) has been substantiated. However, the direct causal relationship and potential intermediary mechanisms linking these conditions have not been clearly defined in prior studies. MATERIAL & METHODS: This study employed univariate Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore those relationship. Instrumental variables from genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets for TD (n = 218,792), hyperthyroidism (n = 460,499), hypothyroidism (n = 213,990), and OCPC (n = 12,619), along with 41 intermediary inflammatory cytokines (n = 8293), were analyzed. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) method assessed the causal relationships, while summary MR analysis with pQTL datasets from decode and 91 inflammatory cytokines explored the cytokines' roles as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for OCPC. Multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis quantified the mediation effect of these cytokines in the TD-OCPC relationship. RESULTS: UVMR analysis provided strong evidence for a causal relationship between TD (OR = 1.376, 95 % CI = 1.142-1.656, p = 0.001), hyperthyroidism (OR = 1.319, 95 % CI=1.129-1.541, p = 0.001), hypothyroidism (OR = 1.224, 95 % CI = 1.071-1.400, p = 0.003), and the risk of OCPC. CXCL9 was identified as a significant intermediary in mediating the risk of OCPC from TD and its two subtypes (OR = 1.218, 95 % CI = 1.016-1.461, P = 0.033), suggesting its potential as a predictive biomarker for OCPC. MVMR analysis further revealed that CXCL9 mediated 7.94 %, 14.4 %, and 18 % of the effects of TD, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism on OCPC risk, respectively. DISCUSSION: This study not only elucidated the potential causal relationships between TD including its two subtypes and OCPC risk, but also highlighted CXCL9 as a pivotal mediator in this association.

Four common Patrinia species, including P. heterophylla, P. monandra, P. scabiosifolia and P. villosa, have been documented as herbal medicines with various clinical applications, such as anti-cancer, anti-diarrhea and sedative. However, the authentication of medicinal Patrinia species poses a problem, particularly with the processed herbal materials. This study aimed to systematically authenticate the four medicinal Patrinia species in the market using morphological and chemical characterization, as well as DNA markers. We found the species identity authenticated by traditional morphologies were in good agreement with both chemical and molecular results. The four species showed species-specific patterns in chromatographic profiles with distinct chemical markers. We also revealed the power of complete chloroplast genomes in species authentication. The sequences of targeted loci, namely atpB, petA, rpl2-rpl23 and psaI-ycf4, contained informative nucleotides for the species differentiation. Our results also facilitate authentication of medicinal Patrinia species using new DNA barcoding markers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the application of morphology, chemical fingerprinting, complete chloroplast genomes and species-specific Insertion-Deletions (InDels) in differentiating Patrinia species. This study reported on the power of a systematic, multidisciplinary approach in authenticating medicinal Patrinia species.

Chaohu lake is a key water body for water pollution prevention and treatment in our country. However, it has been at a higher eutrophication level recently. Here, the surface water and groundwater in the Dianbu River Basin, a secondary tributary of Chaohu Lake, were taken as the research object. In order to test the hydrochemical composition and hydrogen and oxygen isotope values of different water bodies, 30 groups of surface water samples, 36 groups of groundwater samples, 16 groups of hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope samples, and 18 groups of groundwater hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope samples were collected in August 2021 (wet season), November 2021 (normal season), and February 2022 (dry season). The seasonal and spatial variation characteristics were analyzed to explore the hydrochemical characteristics and formation mechanism of water bodies by means of mathematical statistics, Piper triangular diagram, Gibbs figures, and ion ratios. The following results were obtained: ① precipitation was the main source of surface water and groundwater in Dianbu River Basin, and the evaporation fractionation effect of surface water was more significant than that of groundwater. At different periods, the surface water was more enriched with stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen than groundwater. The stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water showed seasonal variation, relative enrichment in the wet season, and depletion in the dry season. ② Both surface water and groundwater in the Dianbu River Basin were weakly alkaline, and the concentration of ions in surface water was significantly lower than that in groundwater. Ca2+ and Na+ were the main cations in surface water, Ca2+ was the main cation in groundwater, and the dominant anion in all water was HCO3-. The hydrochemical typology of surface water was mainly HCO3·Cl-Na·Ca, and that of groundwater was mainly HCO3-Na·Ca. ③ The concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes of surface water and groundwater showed certain seasonal and spatial differences. From the wet season to the dry season, the concentrations of TDS, K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, and SO42- in surface water showed an increasing trend on the whole. The concentrations of Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in groundwater showed little change but increased slightly, whereas the concentrations of Cl-, SO42-, and NO3- showed an increasing trend on the whole. The concentrations of Cl-, SO42-, and NO3- in the water showed relatively large seasonal fluctuations. From upstream to downstream, the concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes in surface water first decreased and then increased, among which the concentration of NO3- increased the most. The concentrations of the main hydrochemical indexes of groundwater in the direction of runoff changed little overall, but the concentration in the discharge area was higher than that in the recharge area. ④ The formation of hydrochemical characteristics of the water was mainly controlled by water-rock interaction but was also influenced by human factors. The water-rock action was mainly the weathering dissolution of silicate rock, salt rock, and carbonate rock. Man-made pollutants such as sewage from a sewage treatment plant, domestic sewage, and feces had obviously changed the hydrochemical characteristics of the local water. ⑤ Compared with that in 2016, the concentration of NO3- in surface water showed a certain degree of reduction. The nitrogen pollution control work carried out by the local government had achieved certain results, but it was still necessary to strengthen the pollution prevention and control of sewage and feces in the downstream of the Dianbu River, some tributaries (such as the Dingguang River and Maqiao River), and some residential areas.

Chromium and organochlorine solvents, particularly trichloroethene (TCE), are pervasive co-existing contaminants in subsurface aquifers due to their extensive industrial use and improper disposal practices. In this study, we investigated the microbial dechlorination kinetics under different TCE-Cr(Ⅲ/VI) composite pollution conditions and elucidated microbial response mechanisms based on community shift patterns and metagenomic analysis. Our results revealed that the reductive dechlorinating consortium had high resistance to Cr(III) but extreme sensitivity to Cr(VI) disturbance, resulting in a persistent inhibitory effect on subsequent dechlorination. Interestingly, the vinyl chloride-respiring organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) was notably more susceptible to Cr(III/VI) exposure than the trichloroethene-respiring one, possibly due to inferior competition for growth substrates, such as electron donors. In terms of synergistic non-OHRB populations, Cr(III/VI) exposure had limited impacts on lactate fermentation but significantly interfered with H2-producing acetogenesis, leading to inhibited microbial dechlorination due to electron donor deficiencies. However, this inhibition can be effectively mitigated by the amendment of exogenous H2 supply. Furthermore, being the predominant OHRB, Dehalococcoides have inherent Cr(VI) resistance defects and collaborate with synergistic non-OHRB populations to achieve concurrent bio-detoxication of Cr(VI) and TCE. Our findings expand the understanding of the response patterns of different functional populations towards Cr(III/VI) stress, and provide valuable insights for the development of in situ bioremediation strategies for sites co-contaminated with chloroethene and chromium.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigates the relationship between traffic accidents in expressway tunnels and their influencing factors, with the aim of predicting traffic accidents within tunnels and presenting reasonable recommendations to improve tunnel safety. METHODS: The study utilizes a dataset of 586 traffic accidents occurring exclusively within 8 tunnels along a Guangdong Province expressway from 2017 to 2021. It applies the geometric alignment consistency principle to segment road sections, defines tunnel boundaries based on driving behavior, and employs a Bayesian-modified negative binomial regression model (B-NB model) to identify 6 significant variables from a pool of 17 factors. RESULTS: The predictive performance of the B-NB model demonstrated similarities to that of the fixed parametric model. This outcome might be attributed to the chosen prior distribution settings and the limited amount of data. Nonetheless, the model effectively captures relationships among variables, leading to improved accuracy in accident prediction and the predictive model achieves a 76.1% accuracy rate. CONCLUSIONS: Drawing from the estimation results, practical measures are suggested across three dimensions: road geometric alignment design, tunnel traffic safety facilities, and traffic emergency management. These proposals aim to ameliorate the severe consequences of tunnel accidents. Future research will explore an in-depth comparison of estimation results, considering the impact of time and variable correlation on the prediction model by expanding the existing data. This will guide the direction of subsequent research endeavors.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and destruction of the cerebrovascular system is a major factor in the cascade of secondary injuries caused by TBI. Laser speckle imaging (LSCI)has high sensitivity in detecting cerebral blood flow. LSCI can visually show that transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS) treatment stimulates angiogenesis and increases blood flow. To study the effect of tFUS on promoting angiogenesis in Controlled Cortical impact (CCI) model. tFUS was administered daily for 10 min and for 14 consecutive days after TBI. Cerebral blood flow was measured by LSCI at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after trauma. Functional outcomes were assessed using LSCI and neurological severity score (NSS). After the last test, Nissl staining and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were used to assess neuropathology. TBI can cause the destruction of cerebrovascular system. Blood flow was significantly increased in TBI treated with tFUS. LSCI, behavioral and histological findings suggest that tFUS treatment can promote angiogenesis after TBI.

Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (LAS) glass ceramics have a low coefficient of thermal expansion, high mechanical strength, and excellent chemical stability. With advancements in glass ceramics, researchers have explored using LAS glass ceramics with transition metal doping and rare earth doping. Most previous studies have studied the impact of rare earth element doping on crystallization primarily in the context of conventional nucleating agents present in glass. In this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of Y2O3 and La2O3 on LAS glasses in the presence of undoped nucleating agents. The crystallization mechanism of La2O3 and Y2O3 doped LAS glass ceramics was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallization kinetics of the glasses were analyzed using model-free and modeling methods. Moreover, the activation energy of crystallization and the indices of crystallization and growth of glass ceramics were calculated, and the crystalline phase and microstructure of the samples were characterized. All three fractions of the LAS glass showed consistent crystallization under different calculation methods. The glass doped with La2O3 and Y2O3 exhibited two- or three-dimensional growth during crystallization, promoting crystallization in the LAS glass. The Y3La0 sample demonstrated the most favorable crystallization effect. In the presence of an undoped nucleating agent, rare earth elements can enhance glass crystallization; this new idea can be utilized for the development of new materials.

Background: Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a rare form of tinnitus that aligns with the heartbeat. It is typically brought on by lesions with significant vascularity, which produce aberrant sound conduction and increase the risk of mental health issues and hearing loss. Venous PT is more prevalent than arterial PT. Open procedures or interventional procedures can be used to treat PT. We present here a case of PT caused by venous luminal stenosis combined with jugular bulb (JB) malformation, which was improved by stenting and JB embolization. Case presentation: A 59-year-old woman presented with long-term tinnitus consistent with heart rhythm and hearing loss, accompanied by anxiety, insomnia, and depression. The results of brain MRV, CT, and DSA showed stenosis of the right sigmoid sinus and high jugular bulb (JB) with dehiscence of the JB wall. The patient saw a significant improvement in PT symptoms following sigmoid sinus stenting and spring coil embolization of the high JB, following the diagnosis of PT. The patient had no PT recurrence for the course of the 31-month follow-up period. Conclusion: In the present PT case, there was a simultaneous onset of the right sigmoid sinus stenosis and the high JB with the JB wall abnormalities. Sigmoid sinus stenting and spring coil embolization of high JB may be a treatment for the PT, but the prevention of post-stenting complications is still an issue that requires great attention and needs further study.
